 Shemsi Prinzivalli

Shems Prinzivalli works in a team approach, but as a private practitioner in a confidential manner. She believes that well-being is available to everyone regardless of life circumstances, past history, or previous difficulties in therapy. Working with a therapist is not a moral weakness or stigma of abnormality. In fact, in a perfect world, we would all be in therapy on a regular basis. It just makes sense.

Shems brings a unique background, life experience and in-depth professional training to her work. With expertise in treating a wide variety of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, addiction, obsessive behavior, trauma, relationship strife, parenting struggles and family issues, the work is always responsive to your particular needs and situation. Drawing on a network of skilled professionals, there may be times when a consult with a psychopharmacologist, pain specialist, internist or other professional might be recommended. This will always be done with frequent communication, including any individuals you already work with and wish to include in a team approach. Alternatively, you may wish for no one to know you are in therapy. For physicians, clinicians, attorneys and high-profile individuals this may be particularly important. Treating struggling professionals who tend to suffer in silence is one of Shems' specialties.

As an addictionologist, Shems is credentialed and highly trained in several areas. She is a CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor), a BCTS (Board Certified Trauma Specialist), CEDT (Certified Eating Disorders Therapist) and is trained in advanced skills in accessing subconscious patterns which contribute to suffering. She welcomes the opportunity to work with you, your family or those you love. You will always be treated with respect and with the utmost of confidentiality.

Shemsi Prinzivalli is the founder and director of the Center for Psychotherapy.  She is an eclectic therapist, a conflict resolution specialist, a certified addictions counselor and a certified trauma recovery specialist. Traditionally trained, she has over 20 years of experience in working with others in a skillful manner.

She has also done advanced training in working with the subconscious mind, and has studied energetic healing as well as the mystical traditions of the Sufism, Kabbalah, Zen Buddhism and Tantric Yoga. The Center was therefore established in the metro New York area to provide a place for personal growth and self-inquiry which welcomes people of all spiritual traditions. Shemsi (rhymes with ‘calms’) was given this Sufi name while living and studying with the Sufis for many years in Jerusalem, Istanbul and the United States and many people still know her and prefer to call her by this name.

Combining a unique approach to personal growth, she teaches workshops in Conflict Resolution, Voice Dialogue in Working With The Shadow, Kabbalistic Psychology and Healing, and she occasionally leads Sufi Zikr upon invitation. She is the author of the recently published book entitled:  How to Be A Mystic In A Traffic Jam: Reflections on Living As A Spiritual Person in Everyday Life.

Each year she conducts a 3-weekend School of Psychospiritual Healing which is open to practitioners and lay people.  Click here for more information.

Shemsi is also deeply committed to coexistence work in Israel/Palestine and her life and work has become increasingly more focused on this topic over time. She is the current president of the Alliance for Middle East Peace and a member of the Task Force for the International Fund for the Middle East. She is also on the board of the Friends of the Interfaith Encounter Association and a supporter of the Sulha Peace Project, a musical and creative community for Israelis and Palestinians who gather in desert regularly for joint musical, artistic, and listening projects which promote cross cultural understanding and musical celebration.
